Laboratory Renovation - Aotea Pathology

Wellington, New Zealand

Following the merger of Medlab Wellington and Valley Diagnostics into Aotea Pathology, the existing laboratory facility was cramped, especially with the additional diagnostic equipment and staff the merger brought.

We were engaged to provide modern laboratory spaces, a sample reception, as well as a patient reception area that reflected their new corporate image.

Existing small spaces were gutted and formed into free flowing open plan areas to allow for efficiencies and interaction. Not only for sample handling, but for the efficient interaction of staff and information. Clean rooms were made a part of the facility through the use of glass and visual contact. Specimen reception was redesigned to improve flow and reduce double handling.

Features within the fitout include acoustic backed 'timber-look' vinyl to get away from a cold and clinical look. It also provides a greater degree of comfort for the staff, many of whom spend many hours on their feet.

The only public face of the lab is the patient reception area. Needing to express the corporate image of high quality and high standards, it is at the same time welcoming and private, for people requiring tests at what is often a stressful time.

The laboratory needed to be fully operational during the construction so staff worked in cramped make-shift conditions while the construction project was staged over 2 floors.
