Analytical Laboratory - AsureQuality

Lower Hutt, Wellington

Lab-works Architecture acted as lead design consultant to both the building owner/developer and the tenant, AsureQuality. This new building brought together various environmental testing and analytical business units from around Wellington into one facility, as well as provided a facility for its newly trademarked UltraTrace service.

Both organisations placed tight financial controls on the project, along with the need for a high degree of future flexibility. The choice of construction methods and materials provided for the economic use of both time and money, while still creating a distinctive building. Internally, the use of borrowed light, open plan areas and visual connection between spaces creates a pleasant environment for users.

The creation of modular work areas allowed for the re-allocation of space as needed for specific work. Support areas for wash up, dangerous goods, sample reception and storage etc were centralised for efficiency. Easy access to services is provided via ring mains and service panels on the modular benches. With write-up areas provided adjacent to the laboratory work areas, further efficiencies were gained.

The use of large windows provides a strong connection to the outside, while the raking ceiling of the laboratory area provides a sense of space and interconnection with the internal windows to the support areas. The result is a single storey ‘L' shape laboratory space with a high stud and a two storey office and support block that provides excellent circulation and interaction between public and secure scientific areas, as well as between laboratory and support staff.

Creating 1800m2 of floor area the facility is AsureQuality's regional flagship site housing 60-70 staff members.
