Science South Building

Lincoln University - Canterbury

New Zealand Commercial Project Awards 2022 - Gold Award in the Construction Marketing Services Education Project Category

Lab-works Architecture partnered with Sheppard and Rout Architects to successfully complete new analytical sciences facilities on Lincoln University’s Campus in Canterbury. Located in the south-eastern corner of the campus, the building is coloured a distinctive pioneer red and is home to research laboratories, offices, collaboration spaces, and social areas for the Agricultural Sciences department of the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The new building is the first of two new science facilities that will deliver fit-for-future learning and research spaces. In line with the University’s sustainable infrastructure goals, the building is built to Level 4 Green Star standard and features wool carpets and wool acoustic wall insulation, a cement substitute mix floor slab, as well as thermally insulated exterior cladding. The building features a roof-mounted solar array capable of generating 60.3 kW.

Science South is home to more than 50 staff and students from the Department of Agriculture Sciences, which is responsible for teaching and research in animal sciences. The laboratory design is based on a paired, parallel open-lab layout with a concentrated central core providing circulation and dip-in type rooms with utilities, storage, and specialist spaces. These smaller, highly serviced areas are centrally located to improve hydraulic and mechanical design efficiency as well as benefiting the workflow for users.

In May 2022, the building won a Gold Award in the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards in the Construction Marketing Services Education Project category.
